Robert: Robert Dixon Crow was the son of tenant farmers who migrated from Alabama to Texas when Texas was just opened up to colonization probably by Austin the father of Stephen F. Austin. It is my understanding that his father and mother died of yellow fever and that he lived with relatives. There was quite a migration to east Texas following the war with the Cherokee Indians and many of the soldiers were given land in Alabama and in Georgia. Many times the people sold this land and headed west hearing that Texas was opening up. At the time the great red river raft had been blasted out and Jefferson, Texas became the "gateway to the west". A fairly well developed road was available to San Antonio, TX., which was at that time the center of activity in the Spanish territory. This road was known as the Old Spanish Trail and ran through Rusk and also south of Marshall, Texas.

After his marriage to Grace, they settled on a farm near Sylvester, where they became well known for a twenty mile radius for their Ribbon-Cane Syrup making and Sourdough Rolls. Ed made syrup for the entire community as well as tending to a large peach orchard and several bee hives. Grace was kept busy with her superb cooking skills, making butter, and keeping fresh milk in supply for her family. In addition to his farm responsibilities, Ed was the fire warden for the Southern Pine Lumber Company.
