     According to abstracts of land patents in the colony of North Carolina 1735-1764 by Margaret M. Hofman, on June 5, 1740 Godfrey lee bought 640 acres of land in Edgecombe County on the south side of Town Creek.

     Samuel Lee and his wife, Elizabeth, sold a tract of 640 acres on the bank of Town Creek on November 28, 1758, as noted in abstracts of Edgecombe County, N. C. 1759-1772. It is reasonable to assume that these two references are to the same tract of land. By 1797, Samuel Lee Sr. lived in Newbern district of Johnston County, North Carolina. Samuel was listed on the 1797 census as the head of the household. Then in 1800 there were both a Samuel, Sr. and a Samuel, Jr. listed as heads of households in the same county. This would be Godfrey's son, Samuel & Samuel's first son, Samuel Jr. Not much is known about Samuel Sr. except that in 1797 he and his wife, Elizabeth, had two sons over sixteen years of age; one son under sixteen; one daughter; and one slave. Since Samuel Sr. was sixty-two years old at the time, it is quite possible that many of their children were already married and gone from home. In the 1800 North Carolina census he had one male child, between sixteen and twenty-six and one female the same age. No doubt his wife had died within the past three years. He also had one free person and four slaves in his household. Nothing of his death or burial is known.

     He and his wife moved to Mississippi before 1820.

     Lucy: Was the mother of fourteen children, 6 sons and 8 daughters. Most of them were born in North Carolina. Lucy was 1/2 Choctaw or Cherokee Indian.

     (2) He married Sarah Shay #877.

     According to the Wayne County, Mississippi census, Sarah had 4 sons by a previous marriage. Sarah and Samuel had 3 more children, 1 daughter and 2 sons. This made Samuel the natural father of 17 children and the step-father of 4. This made Samuel the natural father of 17 children and the step-father of 4. This accounts for the 21 children that family lore says he had.

                             Thomas enlisted in the Confederate Army on August 10, 1861 at Chunky Station, Mississippi. He served in Capt. W. B. Johnson's Company (Chunky Heroes) 3rd Regiment Mississippi Volunteers. This company was successively designated as Captain Johnson's Company, (Old) Company B, and (New) Company D, 3rd Regiment, Mississippi Infantry. He died May 29, 1864 and is buried at Camp Muir, Louisiana. It is not known if he was killed in action or was wounded and died from his wounds.

12.  John Lee #69, born Jan 05 1836 in Hickory, Newton County, MS., died Feb 13 1899 in Crecy, Trinity County, TX., buried in Apple Springs, Trinity County, TX., cemetery Bennett Cemetery.

       John lee came to Polk County, Texas in 1853, where they lived until about the middle of the 1870's. They moved to Trinity County where Mary died on Dec. 18 1879. John was a veteran of the confederate army. His military records states that he was six feet tall with a dark complexion, black eyes, and black hair. He enlisted on June 13, 1864 in company F, 22nd Texas infantry but was discharged on Nov. 9, 1864 due to physical disability. He returned home where he engaged in farming. Tragedy struck the lee family on Feb. 13, 1899. A winter storm was in progress, making the ground slick with ice. While carrying a stick of wood for the fireplace, perhaps a large back log, John slipped and fell. The wood crushed his head and broke his neck, killing him instantly. He and both his wives, as well as at least fifteen of his children, are buried in Bennett Cemetery near Apple Springs in Trinity County, Texas.

15.  James Franklin Lee #137, born Mar 19 1839 in Hickory, Newton County, MS., died Oct 24 1893 in Trinity County, TX., buried in Apple Springs, Trinity County, TX., cemetery Bennett Cemetery.

       James moved to Texas in 1853 with relatives and settled in Polk County. In 1860, he was living with his aunt and uncle, Sarah (lee) and Hiriam Walker along with his sister, Clarissa Gibson, and her son. On Jan. 3, 1861, he married his second cousin, Caroline. James Lee enlisted in the Confederate Army in Freestone County in 1862. He served in Col. Elmore's Regiment, Capt. Richardson's Company E of the Texas volunteers until the end of the war. He returned to Polk County where he was a farmer and rancher. They lived there until 1871 or 1872 when they moved to Trinity County, TX. Then in the early 1880's they moved west to Clay County, TX. They stopped for awhile in Kaufman County, TX., where their baby child died. Shortly afterward, they moved on to Buffalo Springs in Clay County, where they settled. Later in life they moved back to either Polk or Trinity County, TX. James died of a leg infection on Oct. 24, 1893 and was buried in the Groveton Cemetery in Trinity County, TX. in an unmarked grave.

       Caroline: She went back to Clay County in 1896 after James died, but later returned to Lufkin, Angelina County, TX. Caroline died at the home of her son, Richard Columbus Lee.

                             lived to be about 100 years old. When he was ninety, his doctor took him for an airplane ride for a birthday present. Richmon said he had never done anything like that and nothing had pleased him more then that trip. He said his next wish was to ride in a bomber.

16.  William Harrison Lee #138, born Jul 05 1840 in Meridian, Lauderdale County, MS., died Feb 22 1932 in Beach, Golden Valley County, ND., buried in Beach, Golden Valley County, ND., cemetery Beach City Cemetery.

       He enlisted in the confederate army and served until he was captured. He was imprisoned in Ohio and kept so long after the end of the war that his wife thought that he was dead. Believing that she was a widow, she remarried. When William was released and heard the news of his wife's remarriage, he decided just to disappear rather than to cause her trouble. It was many years before he was heard from again. It’s been said that during some of that time he was an Indian Scout for the Government. William eventually settled in Weldon, Decatur County, Iowa where he married Henrietta, daughter of Henry Branscomb. In the fall of 1906 William rode in to Medora, Billings County, North Dakota on a freight train. He filed on a homestead seven miles south of Medora on the east side of the, little Missouri river and then returned to his home in Weldon, Iowa. The next spring (1907), he and his sons returned to Medora and built a log house and other buildings. Some of the sons also filed on homesteads in the community then returned to Iowa for their families and their mother.

       The story goes that there was an epidemic of some disease raging through the community where they lived. Tyson was helping care for the sick and dying neighbors, when he became ill himself. Realizing that he had the dreaded disease and that his chance for survival was slim, his main thought was to save his wife and child. He returned to the front yard of their home, called out Adeline, and told her to take the baby and leave by the back door and not to come back. She did as requested. He died, but she and her baby were spared. Soon after Tyson's death Nancy met and married George, they lived in Leon County a few years but later moved to Freestone County, TX., to the Birdston Community where they lived out the rest of their life.

       Jacob came to Leon County with his parents in 1867 and then to Freestone in 1869. He met his future bride, Cynthia, when he offered to help his brother George put out a fire they were married a year later. Jacob held several kinds of jobs during his lifetime. He worked breaking horses, helping build H & T C Railroad, cutting hair and pulling teeth in the back of a general store. Later he owned and operated a barber shop in Wortham located along the Railroad. Jacob was a charter member of the Masonic lodge and Cynthia was a member of the order of eastern star. They were Methodists and attended church regularly where Jacob was superintendent of the Sunday school for eighteen years. It’s been said that he quoted scriptures frequently and allowed no "cussing” in his barber shop.

       They arrived and settled in Leon County, TX with their baby daughter, Columbia in 1858. William returned to Mississippi in 1861 to join the confederate army and lost his life. He never knew about his son, William F. Graham. Sarah died of Pneumonia in 1866 and the two orphans were reared by their grandparents, James and Mary Graham.

       William was known as Will in the community of Crecy, TX. At the age of 29 Will suffered a Stroke. He had crops in the fields and small children in the house. Jennie tended to him, the crops, and the children. Jennie had a hard time but she did it. Will got over the stroke and went back to farming. Farmers would borrow the money to plant the crops. When the crops came in, they would pay back the banker. If the crops didn't make enough to pay the banker back, the bank would take their animals. During the winter months, Will would chop wood for the fireplace and fix fences. Jennie was a midwife and sometimes she was a lot like a doctor. She would tend to the sick. Jennie delivered lots of babies in her lifetime. Jennie could really cook and people loved to eat her cooking. On Sunday, twenty to thirty neighbors, friends and family would come by to eat. Will died on May 20, 1933 at five minutes after twelve from a heart attack. After Will’s death Jennie had a difficult time, she still had children at home, age's eight and ten; so they moved around a good bit. She made very little as a midwife. Jennie married the second time to doe turner. Jennie lee died February 11, 1951 of diabetes and other complications.        John: When John Walter "Walt" Crow was born on September 21, 1870, in Apple Springs, Texas, his father, Robert Dixon Crow, was 33 and his mother, Lucinda Caledonia Randolph, was 24. John lived in Texas during the Apache Wars, when white settlers and native Apache Battled for control of the area. When he married Nellie Lee on November 17, 1917, in Apple Springs, Trinity County, Texas, John was 47 years old. They had six children in 13 years.

      

       John's father Robert Dixon Crow passed away on January 12, 1921, in Lufkin, Trinity County, Texas, at the age of 83. John Walter Crow was the constable of Trinity County and during a shoot out with Brant Hollis, in front of the Sue Salser Store, they were both shot by each other and died at the scene. According to the Lufkin Daily News clipping, apparently there was a misunderstanding over the drowning of several goats belonging to John Walter Crow. John died on April 23, 1932, in Apple Springs, Trinity County, Texas, at the age of 61, and was buried in the Glendale Cemetery, Lufkin, Trinity County, Texas.

                             Mavis Frances Lee Floyd was the third child and oldest daughter of John and Cricket Lee. She was born on February 28, 1934 in Trinity County, Texas. She married Charlie Lamar Floyd on August 17, 1950. Together they had and raised four sons and a daughter and enjoyed 42 years of marriage. Mavis was an enthusiastic singer and led the singing at her church for many years. She also loved to garden and grow flowers and had a reputation as a real green thumb. Mavis was a cheerful, affectionate person with a deep Christian faith. She lost her short but difficult battle with pancreatic cancer on April 12, 2007 in Lufkin, Texas.

                             Charlie Lamar Floyd was the oldest child of Albert Andrew Floyd and Bessie Vivian Mann. He was born August 8, 1929 and was raised mostly in the community of Carlisle, Texas. His mother died when he 14 years old, leaving behind Charlie, his two little sisters, Maxine & Laverne and their older, half brother "Dick" Tipton. Charlie married Mavis Frances Lee on August 17, 1950 and they had four sons and a daughter. The family traveled a lot in the first half of their marriage as Charlie followed work all over Texas and out to California. Charlie was a very hard working person, with a great sense of humor and a distinctive laugh. He was the kind of man who would do anything to help people. He died September 5, 1992 in a Tyler, Texas hospital.

                             Wilna Jolene Lee was born November 8, 1945, she was the seventh child of John Edward and Nancy Jane Hollis Lee. She was named Wilna by her brother Cole, after one of his favorite schoolteachers. She married Haskell Casper in 1965 and had five children. Wilna was a sweet person, who enjoyed family get-togethers and her little dog, Sweetie. She died January 13, 2011 in Zavalla, Texas.

       Minnie (Lee) Campbell, 88 of Apple Springs, daughter of the late Jennie Jo (Crawford) and William Solomon Lee, was born May 14, 1923 in the Crecy Community in Trinity County, and passed away May 21, 2011 in a local hospital.

      

       Mrs. Campbell loved nature and the outdoors. She enjoyed animals and nursing them back to health. She was a hard worker, especially outdoors. She knew a lot about her family's history. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

      

       Services for Mrs. Campbell were held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 24, 2011 in the Gipson Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed in the Bennett Cemetery.

                             Though I never met Melinda I was deeply saddened by the news of her passing. I first contacted Melinda in 1985 thanks to information supplied to me by Mrs. Elaine Ingram Lockhart, Trinity County Clerk in Groveton, TX. We learned after corresponding that we were cousins. We wrote and talked several times on the phone and learned that we shared a common interest, researching our family trees. I would like to dedicate this section covering the Campbell Family and all families connected to it to Melinda's memory, God rest her soul. Also I'd like to thank Desiree (Melinda's Sister) whom I haven't met either for her time and effort sending me the information that I requested. Melinda's death was caused by a blunt trauma to the back. She was never married, and had no children. Occupation: she did everything, and worked very hard at it.

       Peggy: Peggy was born on Palm Avenue in Hemet, CA. on September 30, 1928 to Glen and Hazel (Dean) Henderson. Peggy loved Hemet and resided there for 82 years. She passed away at Cliff View Assisted Living from natural causes in St George, Utah where she and her departed husband Charlie moved to in September of 2010. While attending Hemet schools she met Charlie and they eloped to Yuma, AZ as soon as she turned 15 years of age. When he passed away, they had been married almost 70 years. She worked for San Jacinto School District for many years and most of her fondest memories were of that period. Later, she became secretary for Hemet Ambulance Service. Survivors include daughter Charlesa Hummel of Yuba City, CA; son Mark Crow (Joy) of Hurricane, Utah; grandson Jason Crow (Erika), Garth Crow (Kathleen) and Tim Crow; son of Mark and Joy, and great grandaughter Daryn, child of Jason and Erika. Peggy (Granny) will be interred with Charlie in Hemet at a future date.

       Tamera Ann "Tammy" Herrington was born December 29, 1964 in Lufkin, Texas. Her birth name was Tolbert but she was later adopted by her stepfather. She was married from 1979 to 1986 and had a daughter Amanda Gail.

      

       She passed away after a lengthy illness on December 13, 2004 at age 39. In addition to her only child, Amanda, she was survived by her mother, Violet Lee Herrington, her two sisters, Lora Herrington Brantley and Shurma Herrington, as well as numerous other relatives and friends.
